Mississippi auditor visits North Mississippi, meets local officials
State Auditor Shad White visited North Mississippi this week and met with local officials and residents, the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor said in a Facebook post.
According to the post, White met peanut farmer Brian Atkins and Aberdeen Mayor Dwight Stevens, who showed the auditor the Aberdeen Port. White later met with Sheriff Kevin Crook and members of his team to discuss ways the Auditor’s Office could assist local law enforcement.
The state auditor’s office conducts audits of public funds and works to promote fiscal accountability and transparency in state and local governments. Outreach visits such as this are a way for the office to learn about local priorities, economic drivers and potential areas where oversight or support may be needed.
Ports and agriculture are important components of many North Mississippi communities’ economies, supporting commerce, transportation and jobs. Discussions with law enforcement can also highlight opportunities for the auditor’s office to coordinate on financial reviews, grant oversight or other administrative matters.
Details beyond the Facebook post were not provided. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
