Mississippi agency warns of dangerous ice, urges residents to stay home
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is warning residents that parts of the state, particularly in the northern region, are experiencing dangerous icy conditions and is urging people to stay at home when possible, the agency said in a Facebook post.
The agency offered safety tips for those who must travel. On foot, it advised people to “walk like a penguin — short steps, flat feet, slow and steady,” the post said. For drivers, it recommended slowing down, avoiding sudden movements, not using cruise control and allowing extra space between vehicles.
MEMA also cautioned that ice can be hard to see and make stopping difficult. The post directed residents to follow the Mississippi Department of Transportation for the latest road conditions and updates.
MEMA is the state’s emergency management agency and coordinates disaster preparedness and response. Officials emphasized staying aware and taking time when travel is necessary. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
