MEMA warns thousands without power, urges generator safety

Thousands across Mississippi are without power, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post, and for many customers it may be some time before electricity is restored.

The agency urged residents using portable generators to follow safety precautions: never run generators indoors or in garages; keep generators 20 feet from doors and windows; and turn off and allow the unit to cool before refueling.

MEMA said power crews are working around the clock to restore service and warned residents not to touch or drive over downed power lines. The agency advised people who do not need to be out to stay home and stay safe.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency coordinates information and response during storms and other emergencies. Prolonged outages can pose risks for people who rely on electricity for medical equipment, refrigeration of medicines and heating or cooling. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
