MEMA warns ice storm to hit Mississippi Jan. 23-25
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency issued a winter weather advisory Friday, saying an ice storm is expected to begin late Jan. 23 and last through Jan. 25, according to the latest graphics from the National Weather Service.
MEMA posted the guidance on its Facebook page and urged residents to follow the agency’s four P’s of preparedness: people — check on friends and neighbors, especially vulnerable adults and children; pets — bring animals inside; pipes — insulate pipes and leave water dripping to prevent freezing; and plants — cover or bring them indoors.
The agency provided a link to warming shelters reported to MEMA for residents who need a place to stay: https://www.msema.org/get-assistance/disaster-resources/shelters-and-safe-rooms. MEMA said people should monitor local forecasts and plan for disruptions.
Ice storms can create hazardous travel conditions and cause power outages by coating roads and downing tree limbs. Officials typically advise limiting travel, having emergency supplies on hand and checking on neighbors during extended cold.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
