MEMA posts warming shelter openings as cold wave hits Mississippi
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency posted on Facebook urging residents to seek shelter as dangerously cold temperatures and winter weather conditions affect much of the state.
MEMA said warming centers are being run by city and county officials and that the list it shared includes openings reported to the agency. The post lists openings in several counties, including an Adams County safe room that opens Jan. 24, 2026, at 6 p.m. The Adams location allows service animals and small pets in kennels and is at 323 Liberty Road in Natchez, MEMA said.
The Facebook post also included other county warming shelter openings, including one in Alcorn County, according to MEMA. The agency noted that shelters and safe rooms are operated at the local level and reported to MEMA for public awareness.
Warming centers provide temporary refuge for people without heat, for those who face power outages or for residents who need a warm place during extreme cold. MEMA coordinates state-level emergency information but city and county officials typically operate individual shelters, officials have said.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
