MDOT warns of icy roads in north Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned Wednesday that roads and bridges in north Mississippi are already covered with ice and that conditions are expected to worsen, urging motorists to stay off the roads unless travel is essential.

MDOT said in a social media post that anyone who must travel should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies in case they become stranded or slide off the roadway. The agency specifically noted that bridges and elevated roadways can freeze more quickly than surface streets.

MDOT, the state agency responsible for planning, building and maintaining Mississippi’s highways and bridges, provides real-time traffic and road condition updates through the MDOT Traffic mobile app and at MDOTtraffic.com, the agency said. Officials often use those channels to post closures, travel advisories and detour information during winter weather events.

The advisory underscores the potential for travel disruptions and increased demand for emergency responders during icy conditions. Motorists should monitor local forecasts and MDOT updates before traveling. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
