MDHS fields calls for elderly assistance ahead of forecasted weather
MDHS said in a Facebook post that it has received many calls from people seeking assistance for elderly and other vulnerable adults because of forecasted weather, and that it has provided a flyer with a phone number to call for help.
MDHS is a human services agency that handles requests for social supports and assistance to vulnerable residents. Agencies like MDHS often coordinate resources such as welfare checks, information on warming or cooling centers, transportation and referrals to local service providers during periods of severe weather.
The agency’s notice underscores the heightened risks that forecasted weather can pose for older adults and others with mobility, medical or social vulnerabilities. Those risks can include difficulty accessing shelter, losing power for medical equipment and increased likelihood of heat- or cold-related illness.
Residents who need help are advised to follow the contact instructions on the MDHS flyer and to call local emergency services if someone is in immediate danger. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
