MBI investigates George County pursuit leaving man dead
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing a vehicle pursuit in George County that ended in the death of Austin McCraney, the George County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies were involved in the pursuit, which the sheriff’s office said occurred the previous day, but officials released no further details.
The sheriff’s office said the bureau is conducting an independent review and that George County authorities will fully cooperate with the investigation. Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said the department is committed to transparency and to cooperating fully as the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation conducts what he described as a thorough and independent review.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is the state agency that commonly handles investigations of serious crimes and incidents involving law enforcement, including deaths that occur during police encounters. Such investigations seek to establish the circumstances of the incident and whether laws or department policies were followed.
Officials said they will release additional information as it becomes available. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
