Lowndes County urges residents to protect pets in cold weather
LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. — The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to take extra precautions to protect pets as colder weather approaches, saying animals left outdoors are especially vulnerable to freezing temperatures.
The office advised owners to provide dry, insulated shelter that is protected from wind and to place straw or hay inside pet houses to help retain warmth and provide comfortable bedding. It also recommended checking food and water frequently to ensure they are not frozen and that pets have constant access to nourishment and hydration.
Whenever possible, the sheriff’s office said, pets should be brought indoors during periods of extreme cold. Taking these steps can help prevent illness, injury or death caused by exposure to harsh winter conditions, the agency said.
The sheriff’s office reminded the community that responsible pet care is both a matter of compassion and a public safety concern. Residents are encouraged to prepare now to help ensure their animals remain safe and healthy throughout the winter season.
