Lowndes County man gets 13-year federal sentence

A Lowndes County, Mississippi, man identified as Calvin Baskin was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison today, federal prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Baskin will serve five years of supervised release after completing his prison term. Federal authorities credited a Homeland Security Task Force and local law enforcement with the investigation that led to the conviction.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and partnering federal agencies regularly pursue cases against individuals charged with trafficking controlled substances, saying such prosecutions aim to reduce the supply of dangerous drugs in local communities and hold traffickers accountable.

Supervised release follows federal prison sentences and typically requires former inmates to comply with conditions set by the court, including regular reporting to a probation officer. Federal prosecutors said their office remains committed to working with federal and local law enforcement to keep communities safe.
