Jones honors Martin Luther King Jr., recommits to service
Tyree D. Jones honored Martin Luther King Jr. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and said he is recommitting to the principles of equality, justice and service. Jones, chief of police of the Jackson Police Department and sheriff of Hinds County, posted the message on his Facebook page.
“Dr. King taught us that true leadership is measured by service, not power,” Jones said in the post, adding that King’s fight for equality “opened doors that were once closed and created opportunities” for leaders like him.
Jones also invoked King’s warning that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and said those words continue to guide his work to build trust, protect rights and serve the community with “integrity and compassion.”
He urged residents to honor King through action as well as words and said his office will remain focused on creating safer, stronger and more united communities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
