Jackson Police outline robbery and homicide detectives’ duties
Jackson Police Department said in a Facebook post that its Robbery/Homicide detectives investigate suspicious deaths and collect and evaluate evidence to determine whether a homicide occurred.
The department said detectives begin by investigating and securing crime scenes, setting parameters to prevent public interference and preserving evidence. After the initial inspection, detectives contact known witnesses and search for potential witnesses in the vicinity, and they commonly revisit scenes to identify any evidence missed during the first response.
The post said the unit aims to deliver justice by holding the guilty accountable and protecting the innocent from wrongful accusations. Duties listed by the department include collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and the U.S. District Attorney’s office; arresting suspects; preparing, serving and executing misdemeanor and felony warrants; taking witness depositions; and preparing court documents such as reports, subpoenas and summons, as well as testifying in court.
Homicide and robbery units play a central role in securing evidence for prosecution and often work with forensic teams and prosecutors. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
