Jackson Police Department explains CompStat in Facebook post
Jackson Police Department posted on Facebook recently to explain CompStat, a tool the department says it uses to address crime and quality of life issues.
In the post, the department described CompStat as a “strategic control system” designed for the collection and feedback of information on crime and related quality of life issues. The post summarized the CompStat process this way: “Collect, analyze, and map crime data and other essential police performance measures on a regular basis, and hold police managers accountable for their performance as measured by these data.”
CompStat is used by police agencies to track crime patterns and direct resources where they are most needed. Departments say the process helps identify trends, inform patrol strategies and provide a basis for measuring managers’ performance over time.
The Facebook post included photos illustrating the program, an effort by the department to inform the public about how it monitors crime and holds supervisors accountable. Providing public explanations of policing tools is a way agencies aim to increase transparency and community understanding of law enforcement practices.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
