Jackson mayor urges homeowners to apply for tornado recovery program before deadline
Jackson Mayor John Horhn urged eligible homeowners to apply for a state-administered recovery program before a fast-approaching deadline to receive aid for storm-damaged homes. Applications for the Mississippi Homeowner Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Program, administered by the Mississippi Development Authority, are due by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2026.
The federally funded program assists low- and moderate-income homeowners whose houses were damaged or destroyed during the April 8-11, 2024, tornadoes and straight-line winds, Horhn said in a statement. “Many Jackson families are still working to recover from these devastating storms, and this program can provide critical help to rebuild what was lost,” he said.
According to the Mississippi Housing Recovery program, applicants must have unrepaired storm damage, own and occupy the home as their primary residence and meet income limits at or below 80% of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s area median income. Eligible properties include those located in Hinds County.
Homeowners can apply online, by phone or in person through the Mississippi Housing Recovery website. Applicants should be prepared to provide documentation including proof of identity, income, homeownership, residency, insurance coverage and any disaster assistance previously received. An intake center for Jackson-area residents is available at the Edwards Community Center in Edwards, and there is no cost to apply.
