Ice storm warning takes effect in central Mississippi
An ice storm warning takes effect at 3 p.m. Saturday and will last until 6 p.m. CST Sunday, a Facebook post warned. The warning covers Attala, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clay, Hinds, Leake, Lowndes, Madison, Oktibbeha, Rankin and Winston counties in Mississippi.
The post said significant icing is expected, with ice accumulations up to three-quarters of an inch and additional sleet possible. Officials warned that travel could become impossible and that the storm could cause power outages and tree damage.
Authorities advised residents to consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drivers should use extreme caution and carry a winter storm kit including tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, a shovel, blankets and extra clothing, as well as water and a first aid kit.
People were also urged not to touch downed power lines and to report outages to their electric company. An ice storm warning indicates a high risk of hazardous conditions, including widespread power disruptions and dangerous roadways. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
