Ice covers intersection of Highway 51 and Church Road in Southaven
A Facebook post shows the intersection of Highway 51 and Church Road in Southaven covered in several inches of ice and urges residents to stay home if possible, saying anyone who must travel should use extreme caution.
Southaven is a city in DeSoto County, Mississippi, a suburban community just south of Memphis. Highway 51 is a major north-south route through the area and serves local and through traffic, making icy conditions there particularly disruptive.
Icy road surfaces increase the risk of crashes and can slow or delay emergency response and public services. Municipal crews often treat major routes with salt, sand or plows during winter events, but conditions can remain hazardous until temperatures rise and treatments take effect.
Officials and safety organizations typically advise drivers to avoid travel during heavy icing, and to reduce speed, increase following distance and carry emergency supplies if travel is unavoidable.
