Hinds County sheriff urges residents to avoid travel ahead of winter storm
Hinds County Sheriff and Jackson Police Chief Tyree D. Jones urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions as a winter storm approaches the Jackson metro area and Hinds County, he said in a statement posted to Facebook.
Jones warned of hazardous road conditions, freezing temperatures and limited visibility, and asked people to remain off roadways once conditions begin to deteriorate to allow first responders, utility crews and emergency personnel to work safely and efficiently. He encouraged residents to monitor trusted weather updates and local emergency alerts.
Jones urged residents to download the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office mobile app and sign up for real-time notifications, calling the tool a way to receive critical updates, road closures and emergency alerts directly to a device. He also asked people to check on elderly family members, neighbors and anyone who may need assistance and to prepare for potential power outages by securing outdoor items and keeping essential supplies on hand.
Jones said he is currently recovering from the flu but will continue to monitor conditions and work remotely with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, the Jackson Police Department and emergency operations partners to ensure continuity of leadership and response. “Stay safe, stay informed, and take care of one another,” he wrote. Hinds County includes the city of Jackson, Mississippi. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
