Hinds County sheriff urges residents to avoid travel ahead of winter storm

Hinds County Sheriff and Jackson Police Chief Tyree D. Jones urged residents to take precautions as a winter storm approaches the Jackson metro area and Hinds County, saying hazardous road conditions, freezing temperatures and limited visibility are expected.

In an official statement posted on the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Jones said residents should avoid unnecessary travel and remain off roadways once conditions begin to deteriorate to allow first responders, utility crews and emergency personnel to do their jobs safely and efficiently.

Jones encouraged residents to monitor trusted weather updates and local emergency alerts, download the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office mobile app and sign up for real-time notifications for critical updates, road closures and safety information. He also urged people to check on elderly family members and neighbors, prepare for potential power outages, secure outdoor items and ensure they have essential supplies on hand.

Jones said he is currently recovering from the flu but will continue to monitor conditions and work remotely with the sheriff’s office, the Jackson Police Department and emergency operations partners to ensure continuity of leadership and response. “Stay safe, stay informed, and take care of one another,” he said. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
