Highway Patrol, Lee deputies issue 78 citations near Shannon Primary School

LEE COUNTY, Miss. — A coordinated traffic enforcement operation near Shannon Primary School last week resulted in 78 citations and two DUI arrests, Lee County Sheriff Jim H. Johnson said Tuesday.

Johnson said he coordinated with the Mississippi Highway Patrol to concentrate enforcement along Highway 45 after recent safety concerns in school areas. He said saturation patrols were requested to increase awareness and to cite drivers violating traffic laws in the school zone.

All 78 citations were issued during active school hours in the school zone, Johnson said. Authorities also arrested two drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence during the operation.

Johnson said the goal of the effort was to protect children and improve safety in the school zone. Officials reminded motorists to slow down, stay alert and obey traffic laws when traveling through school zones. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
