Greenville man sentenced to 45 months for meth trafficking

GREENVILLE, Mississippi — Michael Lawrence Hunt, 45, was sentenced to 45 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi said.

Court documents show Greenville police stopped Hunt on Sept. 11, 2024, and discovered more than 55 methamphetamine pills and other illegal substances. Authorities said Hunt had a prior felony conviction at the time of the offense.

Senior U.S. District Judge Michael P. Mills also ordered three years of supervised release. Hunt was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals after the sentencing, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The case was investigated by the Greenville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

U.S. Attorney Scott Leary said drug trafficking continues to harm communities across the state. “Meth addiction is one of the hardest addictions to overcome, often resulting in destroyed lives and families,” Leary said. ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson said the agency will continue working with local and federal partners to target repeat offenders and reduce drug-related crime.

Greenville Police Chief Marcus R. Turner thanked the agencies involved and said the department will continue using all available resources to pursue those who violate the law. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and improving public safety through coordinated law enforcement efforts. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
