Cpl. McWhirter speaks on law enforcement at Lions Club girls conference

Cpl. Tonya McWhirter of the Starkville Police Department spent Saturday afternoon with the Lions Club Girls Leadership Conference at Lake Tiak O’Khata in Louisville, the department said in a Facebook post.

High school-aged girls from Columbus, Louisville, Noxapater and Magee, Mississippi, attended the conference. Officials noted that participants from Columbus included members of the Mayor’s Youth Council.

McWhirter spoke with the students about careers in law enforcement, part of a broader effort by local officers to engage youth and explain public safety work. The Starkville Police Department is the municipal law enforcement agency that serves Starkville and coordinates community outreach programs, the post said.

The Lions Club is an international service organization known for sponsoring community and youth leadership programs. Events such as the conference aim to expose students to civic careers and build relationships between young people and public servants.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
