Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office warns of overnight black ice

Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office warned motorists to use extreme caution because wet roadways may refreeze overnight and create black ice, the department said on its Facebook page.

The advisory said some roads were clear earlier, but any remaining precipitation or moisture can refreeze and produce extremely dangerous conditions. The sheriff’s office posted the notice to alert residents and reduce the risk of crashes and property damage.

Black ice forms when a thin layer of ice develops on road surfaces and is often invisible to drivers, increasing the likelihood of loss of vehicle control. Public safety officials generally advise avoiding travel if possible, slowing down, increasing following distances and avoiding sudden steering or braking maneuvers when roads appear wet.
