Coahoma County sheriff’s office warns of black ice, urges no travel

Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office warned residents on Jan. 28, 2026, that dropping overnight temperatures could cause rapid refreezing and dangerous black ice on roads and walkways and urged people not to travel.

The office said daytime melting followed by below-freezing temperatures overnight would likely create slick, hard-to-see ice patches that make driving and walking hazardous. “If it’s not worth your life, it’s not worth taking the chance,” the post said.

The sheriff’s office posted photos showing conditions on Highway 61 North, Highway 1, Highway 49 North and South and Highway 315 and said road conditions remain extremely hazardous. Officials advised residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office is the primary law enforcement agency for Coahoma County in northwestern Mississippi and routinely uses social media to alert the public about emergencies and road conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
