Biloxi Police introduce S.Q.U.A.W.K. support unit
BILOXI, Miss. — The Biloxi Police Department posted on Facebook introducing a new support unit it called Strategic Quarters Aerial Wingmen and Krime interceptors, or S.Q.U.A.W.K., saying the team could give neighboring Gulfport Police Department “a run for their money.”
The post described the unit as highly trained avian agents that perform low-altitude surveillance, collect evidence and deliver what the department called “less-than-lethal nutrient rich droppings.” The department used hashtags that included #biloxipd, #SquawkSquad and #AprilFools.
Biloxi is a coastal city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and its police department is the primary law enforcement agency for the city. Police agencies increasingly use social media to engage communities, share public-safety information and, occasionally, post lighthearted content or seasonal pranks.
The Facebook post appears to mix humor with outreach to residents and visitors of the Gulf Coast. Details about any real operational change were not provided by the department. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
