UMMC teams pivot to protect care after cyberattack

The University of Mississippi Medical Center said a cyberattack that shut down network systems prompted staff and students across the organization to pivot quickly to protect patient care and keep education moving.

UMMC said teams used handwritten charts, established makeshift command centers and deployed other contingency measures while normal electronic systems were unavailable. The center posted a behind-the-scenes account of its response on its website.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is an academic health center that provides clinical care, medical education and research in the state. Cyberattacks on health care institutions can disrupt clinical workflows, delay access to electronic records and force hospitals to rely on manual processes to maintain patient safety.

The response highlights the importance of preparedness and cross-team coordination when digital systems fail. Details about the attack, its scope and recovery efforts remain limited. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
