UMMC says FBI teams assist onsite as cyberattack response continues
JACKSON, Mississippi — The University of Mississippi Medical Center said Friday that FBI teams and other federal authorities are assisting onsite as staff work “around the clock” to respond to a cyberattack that disrupted systems Thursday.
In an update dated Feb. 20, 2026, UMMC said it has also engaged three national vendors that specialize in cyber forensics, recovery and security to help determine the extent of the intrusion and restore operations. The medical center said it remains unknown how extensive the intrusion is or how long it will take to return to normal operations.
The center said phone systems and the ability to send or receive emails remain down or unreliable. UMMC said hospital services and emergency departments continue to operate and that it has notified other hospitals that it can again accept patient transfers requiring higher levels of care.
UMMC directed facilities seeking transfers to contact Mississippi MED-COM at 601-362-4264 and said ambulance services have been notified that the medical center is no longer on diversion. The medical center said it is developing a way for patients to contact UMMC about routine medical or medication needs and will announce that process once available.
UMMC said it is reaching out to patients who need time-sensitive treatments, including chemotherapy, to arrange appointments and apologized for the disruption. The medical center is a major academic health center in Jackson that provides statewide services, and the attack has forced closures of some statewide clinics and cancellations of outpatient procedures. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
