Survey shows violence affects millions of Mississippians, often starting in childhood

New survey data show that violence touches millions of Mississippians and often begins in childhood, and that it is closely tied to economic and mental health challenges, University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers said.

The findings, released by UMMC, point to connections between early exposure to violence and later health and social outcomes, researchers said. UMMC is a major health sciences center in Jackson that conducts public health research and works with communities across the state.

UMMC researchers said the survey also highlights promising strategies already underway to prevent violence and support people affected by it. Officials said the research is helping shape statewide efforts by informing programs that link economic supports and mental health services with violence prevention initiatives.

The news release with additional background and context is available on UMMC’s website. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
