Student choir brings therapeutic music to University of Mississippi Medical Center

When words and medicine fall short, music can help heal, University of Mississippi Medical Center officials say. A student-led choir, Cantus Medici, founded by medical student Madison Hansen, is bringing therapeutic music into hospital halls and classrooms on the Jackson campus.

Cantus Medici aims to unite science, art and community by providing live music for patients, families and staff while also offering opportunities for medical students to engage with the human side of care. The choir’s activities reflect a growing interest in integrating arts-based approaches into health care settings.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is an academic medical center that trains physicians, nurses and other health professionals and operates hospitals and clinics across the state. Research and clinical practice have increasingly recognized that music and other arts interventions can reduce stress, support mood and complement conventional treatments, making initiatives such as Cantus Medici relevant to patient experience and medical education.

Additional details about Cantus Medici and its schedule are available on the medical center’s news page. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
