Police Warn Against Fireworks and Firearm Discharges During New Year’s Celebrations

JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson Police Department and Hinds County Sheriff’s Office urge residents to celebrate New Year’s responsibly and avoid discharging firearms or fireworks.

Chief Tyree D. Jones of the Jackson Police Department emphasized that firing guns into the air is illegal and dangerous. “What goes up will come down,” he said. “A single reckless act can cause serious injury, property damage, or even death.”

Authorities encourage residents to celebrate with family and friends without risking others’ safety. Firearms should not be part of holiday festivities, officials said.

Jones urged community members to ring in the New Year safely, respecting neighbors and prioritizing safety. He wished everyone a peaceful and prosperous new year.
