Officials urge residents with medical devices to prepare for severe weather

Officials urged residents on social media to prepare for possible severe weather and related power outages, emphasizing extra precautions for those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment.

The post advised people who use oxygen or other electrically powered equipment to have backup oxygen tanks or portable systems available, keep batteries fully charged and store extra batteries. It said users should know how long any backup power will last, register with their power company as a medical-priority customer if available, and identify an emergency contact and a place to relocate that has power.

People with implanted heart devices or other equipment that include battery backups were told to make sure devices are fully charged, keep charging cords and backup batteries accessible and monitor battery levels closely during outages. The post urged patients to follow their physicians’ guidance and to call 911 immediately if they experience a medical emergency.

Officials also encouraged residents to check on family members, neighbors and friends who depend on life-sustaining equipment. Preparation now can save lives, the post said. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
