Mississippi expands physical therapy residencies for athletes, patients
Mississippi college athletes and other patients are receiving enhanced care as the University of Mississippi Medical Center expands physical therapy residency programs in sports and orthopaedics, the medical center said.
The expanded residencies place physical therapists in real-world clinical settings, including university athletics programs and rehabilitation centers, while providing advanced postprofessional clinical training, the medical center said in a news release.
Physical therapy residencies offer structured, mentored education beyond entry-level degrees and aim to develop clinicians with specialized skills in areas such as sports medicine and orthopaedics. Such programs help prepare therapists to manage complex injuries, work alongside athletic trainers and physicians, and meet growing demand for specialized rehabilitation services.
Officials say the expansion can strengthen care for collegiate athletes and improve rehabilitation options for the broader community by increasing the number of therapists with advanced training. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
