Fans celebrate Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day

Every year on March 27, country music fans mark Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day to celebrate the genre’s most unusual and specific song names, Darkhorse Press reported.

Radio personalities joined the observance. Traci Lee of Your Hometown Country US 96.3 immediately thought of Brad Paisley’s “Ticks,” saying the deeper meaning is “I wanna check you for ticks.” Morning show host Gordo told Darkhorse Press he could not immediately pick a favorite but suspected it would involve tractors — and, the report noted, a tractor appears in the outlet’s top five list.

Country music has long embraced humor and hyper-specific details in song titles, the report said. Artists such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, and Bobby Bare have recorded songs with deliberately odd or literal names, reflecting everyday life, heartbreak and small-town absurdity in plain language.

Darkhorse Press published a Top 15 list that includes: “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly” (Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn); “She Got the Gold Mine (I Got the Shaft)” (Jerry Reed); “I’ve Been Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart” (Johnny Cash); “Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog” (Johnny Cash); “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” (Kenny Chesney); “Get Your Tongue Outta My Mouth ‘Cause I’m Kissing You Goodbye” (Carlene Carter); “I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim’s Gettin’ Better” (various artists); “If My Nose Was Running Money, I’d Blow It All on You” (Aaron Wilburn); “Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goalposts of Life” (Bobby Bare); “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” (Joe Nichols); “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song)” (Brad Paisley); “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” (Kitty Wells); “One Piece at a Time” (Johnny Cash); “Redneck Yacht Club” (Craig Morgan); and “If You Can’t Bite, Don’t Growl” (various artists).

Darkhorse Press said Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day honors the writers who translate messy, humorous and specific moments into memorable titles and encouraged readers to celebrate with music — and maybe call their mothers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
