University of Mississippi opens warming shelter as winter weather causes outages

The University of Mississippi said Wednesday that the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff remain its highest priority as winter weather continues to affect campus and the surrounding community.

The university said the GCF Student Union has power and is open as a warming shelter for students and employees, but that staff cannot provide food there. Water bottle dispensers on every level of the Student Union are working, the university said.

The Rebel Market has served as the university’s food service location for the event and is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the statement said. Power has been restored to several residence halls, and university crews are working around the clock with local utility providers and emergency partners to restore power to remaining halls as conditions allow.

The university has established a call center for nonemergency updates at 662-915-7211, open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Officials thanked the campus community for patience and care for one another and said additional updates will be shared as new information becomes available. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
