MSU launches Major Maps to guide students on majors, careers

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State University on Tuesday launched Major Maps, an online year-by-year roadmap designed to help prospective and current undergraduates explore academic programs, choose a major and connect degrees to career opportunities.

Major Maps, available at majors.msstate.edu, presents clear information about what students will study, suggested co-curricular experiences and curricular milestones to help them stay on track toward a bachelor’s degree, university officials said.

David Shaw, provost and executive vice president, said Major Maps responds to questions from students and families about the value of a degree and how it connects to future work. “Major Maps is a practical tool that supports students from the moment they begin exploring Mississippi State through graduation and beyond,” Shaw said.

Shelby Tschume, executive director for strategic initiatives in the Office of the Provost, said the tool will benefit a broad range of users, including parents, advisors, faculty and external partners, by offering consistent, easy-to-read information about majors. She thanked faculty, staff and college leaders who contributed to the project.

The university said Major Maps supports recruitment, academic advising, student retention and employability by helping students and advisors articulate the value of each degree. Major Exploration Workshops co-hosted by the Career Center and the Center for Advising will help undecided students compare programs and align options with their interests and skills.
