Mississippi College showcases international students at festival

Mississippi College will host its annual International Festival from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Nelson Hall’s Swor Auditorium on the Clinton campus, organizers said. Sponsored by the college’s International Institute, the event will feature short presentations and stage performances from the school’s international students, with proceeds supporting international student scholarships.

Richard Ladner, director of the International Institute, said the festival is the largest international event on campus and the institute’s only performance-oriented program. “Our students come from a variety of cultures, and they are excited to share their traditions with the people of Mississippi,” Ladner said. “The audience will have a rare opportunity to see performers from so many countries live and in person.”

Performers will present three-to-five-minute programs that highlight fashion, music and customs from their home countries. The program will include a popular fashion show, student performances and guest acts such as dancers from Ballet Magnificat in Jackson and the Southern Pine Singers representing the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in Philadelphia.

Timothy Young, a Master of Accountancy student from Kingston, Jamaica, who also competes on the MC track and field team and serves as president of the International Student Association, will emcee the festival. “Events like this help build connections, break down cultural barriers and create a stronger sense of unity among students of all backgrounds,” Young said.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $25 for families of any size and may be purchased in advance or at the door. A reception with refreshments and an opportunity to meet performers will follow in the Nelson Hall lobby.
