Mississippi College adds two online nursing master’s tracks

CLINTON, Miss. — The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning has approved two new Master of Science in Nursing tracks for the Mississippi College School of Nursing, the school announced Friday.

The fully online tracks will offer concentrations in nursing education and nursing administration and will join the school’s existing undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, officials said.

Kelly Harden, dean of the Mississippi College School of Nursing, said the additions reflect a significant expansion for the school and will serve applicants seeking to advance education and leadership skills in today’s healthcare environment. The school also has developed three fully online Doctor of Nursing (DNP) tracks that are in Stage II of the IHL approval process. Officials said a DNP in Nursing Education would be the first in the state and a DNP in Executive Leadership would join only one other program in Mississippi. Once the IHL Board of Trustees grants final approval, recruitment can begin.

Mike Highfield, provost and executive vice president at Mississippi College, called completion of Stage I for the DNP program a milestone that reflects faculty and leadership work to show workforce need and the college’s capacity to deliver a DNP program. Remaining Stage II steps include qualifying for initial accreditation, submitting a program self-study and hosting a site visit by IHL nursing education staff, officials said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
